Rachael Gemmill,
Early Childhood Teacher of the Year!
Glen Education were honoured to have our teacher, Rachael Gemmill, named as the Victorian Teacher of the Year! This award recognises an early childhood teacher who has demonstrated evidence-based innovation and exemplary practice in early childhood education and care.
Rachael was recognised for her significant contributions to the development and delivery of high-quality early childhood education programs, specifically, her commitment to celebrating the abilities of all children, as they engage in early learning. With a Masters of Inclusion, her commitment to cultivating a workplace culture that truly embraces inclusion and equality matches her determination to ensure that all children are provided with a quality education.
Rachael humbly accepted the award at the award ceremony, presented by the Department of Education, Victoria. We also recognise the two other finalists, for their outstanding work.
“Congratulations to all the finalists. I’m not very comfortable with praise but I am definitely ok with gratitude. I want to thank all the incredible teachers, educators, leadership and management team I work with at Glen Education. A special thank you to Sam Kolasa, Melissa MacMaster and Josephine Dingiria, and my team at Glen Glover Street Kindergarten, past and present.
I am especially grateful to have three special women in my life that have shaped and supported me. My mum, Carol Gemmill, who is here tonight also and an amazing teacher herself. My sister, Sharna, who has the patience of an angel. And my mentor and friend, Mel MacMaster, who has been one of my biggest advocates and challenges me to think deeply about my practice. Thanks to my husband, Shaun and our three children Matt, Kyla and Rhys. Teaching isn’t a job you leave at the door and your support for my passion doesn’t go unnoticed. Finally, while they’re not here tonight, a huge thank you to all the children and families who have been on this journey with me.”
We were also very humbled to have early Childhood Educator, Wida Tausif, named as one of three finalists, in the educator of the Year award. A huge honour and someone we are very proud to have in our team. Well done Wida! Congratulations to winner, Sue Bullock from Kinglake Ranges Children’s Centre.
We are so proud of Rachael and Wida, and the team that support them to shine. These awards recognise our collective commitment to ensuring young children have the very best early years experience.
